I suppose one of the reasons home buyers are more likely to hire a real estate agent without ever interviewing them is they don’t really understand how important it is to have a good broker.
A buyers agent is responsible for narrowing down the thousands of options out there into a manageable selection for you to pick from that meet your needs. Then they are tasked with writing and presenting a strong offer to beat down all others and win you the home. Your agent is responsible for negotiating on your behalf in order for you to walk away with one of the largest purchases you will ever make.
When you stop to think about it, the brokers who are most likely to have the best availability are those who are not selling very many homes. Going back to the doctor or attorney analysis: do you really want to hire the only professional in town with nothing better to do than sit around and wait for the phone to ring?
When hiring any professional you simply don’t know what you don’t know which is why it’s so important to interview two or three. At the very least research them online before committing to a long-term business relationship involving one of the most expensive assets that you’ll ever buy.
